12/31/09 Fire Destroys Butler Township Trailer Home
12/31/09 A Butler Township family is homeless after a fire destroys their trailer home this afternoon shortly before 3 p.m. Evelyn Jurysta, her husband Joseph and 17 year-old grand daughter, Rachel, watched as firemen battled the stubborn fire at 304 Young Avenue. The Jurysta’s have lived there since 1972.

12/24/09 Body Found in Shenango Township
12/24/09 A body was found along County Line Road late yesterday afternoon in Shenango Township, Lawrence County. A Shenango Township police officer discovered the body when he stopped to assist a disabled truck. The victim is a female which may have been there for at least 24 hours. Preliminary cause of death was not immediately known but more information will be available after an autopsy to be conducted on Saturday. 

12/22/09 Man Surrenders to Police After Lutton Street Standoff
After reports of shots being fired, New Castle Police surround a Lutton Street home and using a bullhorn, talked a man into surrendering. Police closed off the 400 block of Lutton Street where nearly a dozen police cars were assembled. Police were seen with weapons drawn, carrying battering rams and protective shields. Fortunately, the incident ended peacefully and no one was apparently injured.

12/17/09 New Castle Candy Company Fire
The New Castle Candy Company on Croton Avenue experienced a serious fire this evening. Employees were heating a mineral oil in a turkey cooker type fryer when the oil overflowed, caught the building on fire and slightly injured an employee. Mark Panella, New Castle Fire Department’s assistant chief, says damages could reach $100,000.

12/13/09 Black Ice Causes Numerous Accidents in the County
Sunday morning drivers were caught by surprise when temperatures hovered around the freezing mark causing moisture to freeze in the form of "black ice". One accident after another kept emergency workers busy most of the morning. In New Castle, an out of control SUV hit the front of the McCoy Tire Business on South Mill Street. In Slippery Rock Township, 2 women were extricated from their vehicle after crashing into a creek on Frew Mill Road.

12/11/09 New Castle Business Owners Object to Methadone Clinic
12/11/09  Several local business owners and employees attended New Castle’s Zoning Board meeting tonight to voice their objections to a proposed methadone clinic on East Washington Street. A day care center, a martial arts studio and a laundromat are just few of the businesses which their owners say will be adversely affected by the clinic..

12/10/09 Union Township Vacant House Fire on Cliff Street

12/09/09 New Castle Building Collapse
12/09/09  A vacant four-story brick building on Croton Avenue near the City Rescue Mission, partially collapsed during the strong winds around noon. The building’s roof had previously fallen in and made it more susceptible of collapsing during today’s high winds. Kathy Mastropietro, who works next door at the Whittaker Company, explains what she saw as the building came down.

12/05/09 New Castle Oil Spill

12/05/09  New Castle Police and Fire Department were called to investigate and contain a substance leaking from a container near a box trailer on Allen Street around 8:30 a.m. According to Fire Chief Tom Maciarello, the substance believed to be motor oil, had leaked into a nearby storm sewer. Department of Environmental Resource was contacted and emergency personnel remained on the scene for several hours.

12/04/09 Staphs Garage Fire on Taylor Street
A fire at Staph’s Garage on Taylor Street in New Castle early this morning is being investigated by the city’s fire marshall. There were several vehicles inside the building but they were not seriously damaged. The origin of the fire has not yet been determined but is believed to have started near a rear wall window housing an electrical fan.

11/28/09 New Castle North Hill Home Severely Damaged By Fire
11/28/09  Fire severely damages a vacant North Hill home at 809 Locust Street early this evening. Firemen arrived to find smoke coming from the second floor area of the two story frame home. The house has been unoccupied for several weeks since the passing of long-time resident, Virginia Beach. (more later)

11/24/09 Wayne Township House Fire

The residents were not a home when a fire broke out at their Wayne Township home on 14th Street shortly after 10:30 p.m.this evening. Nearly 100 firemen battled the smokey fire which which gutted the 2-story frame home near Ellwood City’s west end. It took nearly an hour and a half to bring the fire under control. Route 351 between Ellwood City and the Koppel Bridge in North Sewickley was closed to accommodate the fire apparatus and hoses that were drawn across Lawrence Ave. More video for "Emergency Personnel" available later Wednesday.

11/20/09 Hermitage Car vs Motorcycle Accident on East State
A car verses motorcycle accident on East State Street in Hemitage sent a motorcyclist in serious condition to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Youngstown.. The accident occurred around noon at the intersection of Wick Ave. and E. State Street. The driver of the car wasn’t injured.

11/17/09 Neshannock Twp Wilmington Road Accident

A two-vehicle head-on crash on Wilmington Road in front of Liberty Mutual causes at least one seriouis injury. The accident ocurred in the turning lanes around 10:30 this morning. Scanner reports had one person unresponsive and being administered cpr. No other video available.

11/17/09 Mercer County Fatal Semi-Truck Accident

11/15/09 Croton Ave at Vine Street Closed Restaurant Fire
A fire destroyed a recently closed restaurant on Croton Ave. in the city of New Castle shortly before midnight. The general alarm fire sent flames high into the sky threatning nearby buildings. According to neighbors, the business was open for less than a month. Click full video for more.

11/14/09 North Beaver Modular Home Fire on Vance Road
A fire call came into LEOC ( Lawrence Co. 911 ) at 2:37 a.m. this morning at a modular home at 110 Vance Road, at the intersection of Route 18, North Beaver Township, Lawrence County. According to North Beaver Fire Chief, Paul Henry, half of the home was involved with flames when he arrived. He went on to say that all occupants escaped the fire.

11/13/09 Shenango Township 422 Accident at Aiken Road
11/13/09  Several vehicles were involved in an accident on Route 422 at Aiken Road in Shenango Township shortly before noon today. One woman was trtapped in her vehicle and had to be extricated by Shenango Township Rescue Personnel. Both drivers were taken by Noga Ambulance to the hospital.

11/09/09 Fire Destroys Home on Grange Hall Road
Around 9:30 p.m. this evening, several teens driving by a home on Grange Hall Road in Scott Township spotted flames coming from the attached garage. Five people who were asleep inside were awakened by the teens beating on the door and ringing the doorbell. All escaped the fire but the home was completely destroyed. Full video available now to "emergency personnel" only.

11/08/09 Wayne Township Farm House Fire
A fire broke out at an old farm house on Zekeli Lane in Wayne Township, Lawrence County shortly after midnight. The old 2-story structure was completely engulfed in flames when firemen arrived. According to Wayne Township Fire Chief, Wes Cunningham, a man and woman were asleep in the house but were able to escape the flames.

10/30/09 Mercer County Police Chase - Crash Injures Trooper
A Mercer State Police chase ends in a crash on Route 965 in Jackson Township Friday afternoon, 24 year-old John Ackerman of Edinboro, Erie County, was taken into custody shortly after ramming his vehicle into a Pennsylvania State Police cruiser, injuring Trooper James Mason..

10/21/09 Neshannock Accident and Rescue
A one vehicle crash that occurred around  5 a.m. this morning on Graceland Road in Neshannock Township sent two people to the hospital. The driver took four hours to self-extricate himself and notify authorities that his pregnant girl-friend was still entrapped in the wreckage.

10/04/09 Man Killed in Traffic Accident on Route 351 in New Galilee
10/04/09  A late afternoon accident on Sunday, took the life of a local man on Route 351 in New Galilee. The black SUV took down a utility pole and wires and then rolled over, ejecting the driver.

10/03/09 New Castle E. Washington Street Garage Fire
10/03/09  New Castle - A fire that broke out around midnight Friday night, destroyed a garage, a pickup truck and damaged several homes. Daniel Bable, owner of the home and garage located at 1611 E. Washington Street, said that the city’s fire investigator has narrowed in on the electrical wiring as a possible cause for the fire.

09/28/09 Car Overturns After Beaver Falls Hit and Run Accident
An early evening accident on Seventh Avenue in Beaver Falls drew a multitude of emergency personnel and spectators to the scene. A vehicle apparently ran a stop sign near McMahon’s Cycles Sales and struck a northbound SUV which overturned. Two people in the SUV were injured. The driver of the other car fled the scene.

09/27/09 North Beaver McKim Road Vacant House Fire
09/27/09  North Beaver Twp. Firemen were called to a vacant house fire at 276 McKim Road around 10:30 a.m. The house which has been vacant for 20 years, was completely destroyed. Firemen were at the scene for approximately four hours.

09/23/09 A Suspicious Fire on Wick Avenue In New Castle
09/23/09  A west side vacant house was destroyed by fire late this evening. New Castle Firemen were called to The corner of Wick Avenue and Cuba Street to find the 2-story wood-frame structure ablaze.

09/21/09 South Butler Teachers on the Picket Line
09/21/09  Nearly 200 teachers in the South Butler School District left their classrooms today to show their solidarity on the picket line at Knoch High School near Saxonburgh. This is the second year in a row that teachers walked out to protest the district’s failure to negotiate in good faith.

09/02/09  State Police in New Castle executed a search warrant at a home on Martha Street in South New Castle Boro Wednesday afternoon. Police confiscated 53 firearms, some of which were reported stolen in local burglaries. 

08/25/09 Grassy Crest Farm Fire in Plain Grove Township

Fire departments from three counties battled a blaze that destroyed a large equipment storage and machine shop on a farm in Lawrence County. The dairy farm known as Grassy Crest Farms, Inc. and located in Plain Grove Township, is owned by the Kind family and is home to over 300 dairy cattle.

08/24/09 Army Bus Collides With Truck-Crane on Route 422
An west-bound army bus on the way to the New Castle area for repair was involved in an accident with a Truck-Crane on Route 422 in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County. The mid-morning crash occurred when the bus driver attempted to avoid the truck which had pulled into the center lane on Route 422.

07/19/09 20 Year-Old Man Rescued at McConnells Mill State Park

The U.S. SARR Corps, a regional search, rescue and recovery team that was practicing at McConnell’s Mill State Park this afternoon, had a real emergency to tackle. A 20 year-old New Brighton man fell approximately 25 feet from a water falls near the Kildoo Bridge. Ron Wisbeth, regional director of U.S. SARR Corps, quickly had his personnel convert from practice mode to actually emergency mode and help Slippery Rock Twp. Fire Department personnel rescue the man. Rick Carson, Chief DCNR Park Ranger at McConnell’s Mill, told KDSTV that the man was sight-seeing with his girlfriend when he slipped on the rocks and suffered a cut on his head and back injuries.

Union Township Home Invasion / Robbery
07/11/09  Around 4:20 p.m. today, a home invasion and robbery occurred at a Miller Road residence in Union Township, Lawrence County. According to the New Castle State Police press release, a 19 year-old man was held at gunpoint by an unknown white male with a small caliber handgun. The actor then fled with approximately 1100 dollars in cash and a gold chain. Police searched the wooded area near the home after neighbors reported seeing the man.

05/28/09 Homicide at Marathon Station on Highland Avenue - NC
05/28/09 Shortly before 9:30 this evening, New Castle City Police were called to a shooting at the Marathon Gas Station on Highland Ave. Police quickly secured the scene after finding a man shot in the head. He was apparently found near the doorway of the station. Approximately 25 minutes later, another shooting occurred on the west side of of the city, this time in a vehicle. The victim was taken to Jameson Hospital by private vehicle and his condition is not known.

05/24/09 2 Arson Fires Destroy Houses In New Castle
Shortly after 4 a.m. this morning, a fire completely destroyed a house on New Castle’s East Side. The vacant house at the corner of Ray and Pearl Streets, was totally ablaze when firemen arrived on the scene. The fire quickly grew to two alarms. While firemen were still dowsing hot spots around seven a.m. at the Ray Street address, a fire broke out at a house on Crawford Ave. Someone set fire to the outside of the structure. This area has seen many fires in the past but has been relatively "quiet" recently.

One woman is dead and a man is flown to a Youngstown Hospital after their motorcycle crashed on Route 65 in Shenango Township. The accident which happened around midnight near Center Church Road, had Route 65 closed till nearly 4 a.m. State Police had brought in reconstruction specialists to help determine a cause.

05/13/09 New Fire Fighting Device Helps Save Home and Dog
A fire at a duplex home on Memory Lane in Scott Township, Lawrence County, could have been a real tragedy. Quick-acting firemen from Scott Township deployed a new device called the FIT-5 to quickly extinguish a fire in the living room on one side of the duplex. The home was saved and the occupant, Glendora Covelli, was thrilled to find that her dog "Babe" survived.

05/09/09 Lawrence County Chase / Crash on Atlantic Ave
05/09/09 A police pursuit through parts of Lawrence County including North Beaver, Mahoningtown, Union Township and the city of New Castle ended in a crash. The vehicle sheared off a utility pole and rolled over an embankment. Emergency personnel with Medevac Ambulance and New Castle Fire Department help extricate the driver of the car. State Police and New Castle Police assisted at the scene and are continuing their investigation.

05/03/09 North Sewickley Mercer Road Crash / Fire
A crash at around 11 p.m. sends a man to a Pittsburgh hospital. The pickup he was driving crashed into several utility poles and burst into flames. Several rescuers pulled the man from the vehicle which had brought down power wires on Mercer Road near Brighton Road.

04/29/09 Wilmington Landmark House Fire
Fire erupted in an old wooden structure that previously housed a hardware store around 10:30 am this morning. The building located at 2550 State Route 956 in Neshannock Falls, was completely engulfed in flames when firemen arrived. One man reportedly was living in the converted home but was not there at the time of the fire. It took firemen several hours to bring the fire under control but the building was a total loss. No one was injured and fire department personnel were still on the scene as of 4 O'Clock.

04/27/09 Big Beaver Blvd Structure Fire
Fire broke out a 2-story brick building on Route 18 at the 351 intersection, near Koppel. At least 3 people escaped the fire, including a young child. The second floor was home to the family and the first floor was used for storage. Fire departments from Beaver and Lawrence Counties fought the fire for several hours in the near record setting heat.

04-15-09 Man Rescued After Car Crashes and Catches Fire
After being clocked at 91 mph on Route 51 in Beaver County, a man crashes his vehicle into a tree on Joe Hall Road. The driver was eluding police when the car was found on fire with the occupant trapped. Police and fire rescue personnel eventually extricated the driver and he was transported be medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.

04/13/09 4 Adults, 1 Child Hurt in New Beaver 2-Vehicle Ax
A van overturns after colliding with a car near the Indian Run Dairy Farm on Route 168. The accident happened around 1:30 this afternoon at the intersection of Route 168 and Beaver Dam Road in New Beaver Boro, Lawrence Country. Victims were trapped in the overturned van and were extricated by fire rescue personnel from New Beaver and Enon Valley. 4 adults, one of which was air-lifted by Stat MedEvac and a 3 year-old child were transferred to hospitals. New Castle State Police are investigating and say charges are pending. Complete video is now available for "emergency personnel".

04/03/09 Former Video Store Damaged in New Castle Fire
The former Video 'N' Go movie rental store on South Jefferson Street caught fire Friday evening around 8:30 p.m. The fire severely damaged the building which was located near the New Castle Fire Department. Harry's Oasis Bar located next door to the video store escaped being damaged by the fire.

03-31-09 Man Falls 30 Feet From Barn Roof in North Beaver
A 24 year-old man working on a barn roof in North Beaver Township, fell approximately 30 feet to the ground below. The accident occurred along Columbiana Road around 9:30 a.m. this morning on the farm of Ronald Martin. Two members from Don Steepleton Construction Co. of Alliance, Ohio were performing the roof work. The victim was unconcious for nearly an hour before being transported by medical helicopter.

03/26/09 4 Vehicle Accident in Scott Township
Slick roads may have contributed to a four vehicle accident that occurred along Route 108 in Scott Township this afternoon. One vehicle side-swiped another, continued on to hit a car parked in a driveway and then the fourth vehicle went over an embankment trying to avoid the initial crash.

03/26/09 Altercation Leads to Chase and Scuffle With Police
A Waldo Street man in his seventies was assaulted by his daughters ex-boyfriend early Thursday evening. After punching the elderly man in the chest, the ex-boyfriend broke several windows in the man’s car. He then took the BMW belonging to the daughter and fled the scene. He was spotted by police and a chase began through the south side. Police eventually caught up with the suspect and scuffled with him before taking him into custody.

03-25-09 Body Found Along Pennsylvania Ave. in Shenango Twp.
Shenango Township police are investigating an incident along Pennsylvania Ave near Bryson Mill Road. Early reports indicated a body was found along the roadway underneath the Route 422 by-pass. Trooper Matthew Roth of the Pennsylvania State Police said at a news conference this morning that a deceased male was found after a reported fight on Bryson Mill. Pennsylvania Ave. is closed to thru traffic between Cascade Blvd. and Savanvah Road while Shenango Police and State Police continue their investigation. The coroner is expected to soon release information as to the identity of the victim.

03/24/09 New Beaver Boro Trailer Fire
Fire crews from Beaver and Lawrence Counties were called to an old mobile home fire in New Beaver Boro shortly after 1:30 p.m. today. The home is on property which also houses the old Wampum Motel located on Route 18.

03/18/09 Neshannock Baseball Player Injured During Game
17 year-old Neshannock High School Junior, Joey Fontana, was seriously injured during a baseball game this afternoon at Flarhety Field. The accident happened as Fontana attempted to field a fly ball and hit his head on the outfield fence. He was transferred by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. Stunned teammates and friends were seen praying for Joey as they hung their heads in disbelief.

03/16/09 Route 422 Pulaski Twp Truck Fire and Separate Crash
A truck fire may have led to an accident involving two other trucks near the fire scene.

03/12/09 2 Hurt in Moravia Street Accident in New Castle
Two people were sent to the hospital after a late afternoon accident on Moravia Street in the city of New Castle. Medevac medical personnel and members of the New Castle Fire Department provided medical assistance at the scene. Moravia Street was temporarily closed to traffic until the accident was cleared. New Castle Police are investigating the incident. No additional video is available.

03/05/09 Crocodile Found After Fire at Former Elementary School
Firemen were surprised at what they found after putting out a fire at the former Mt. Jackson Elementary School in North Beaver Township. Several dogs, dozens of rabbits and one five foot crocodile were removed from the building shortly after the early afternoon fire was extinguished. 02/27/09 Woman Dies in Hermitage Rollover Crash
A Mercer woman is dead after rolling over her vehicle on the Shenango Valley Freeway east of Kennedy Catholic High School in Hermitage. The accident, which occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Friday night, closed the eastbound lanes of the freeway for several hours.

02/25/09 Union Township Couple Overcome With Carbon Monoxide
Shortly before 6 a.m. this morning, Union Township Firemen and ambulance personnel responded to a Coates Ave. home and found a couple suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning. C.O. levels in the home were extremely high and measured at least 500 on the fire departments co meter.

02/22/09 Scott Township Firemen Rescue Dog From Pond
Shortly before 10 a.m. this morning, Scott Township firemen were called to a farm in the 3000 block of Harlansburg Road to rescue a dog that had fallen through the ice. KDSTV arrived after the rescue but just as the dog was being put in a truck to be transported for treatment.

02/20/09 Kelsey Houk Victim of Homicide in New Beaver Boro

02/21/09 11 Year-Old Boy Charged in Double Homicide
Lawrence County District Attorney John Bongivengo held a press conference this afternoon to release details concerning the death of 26 year-old Kelsey Houk and her un-born child. Houk was found dead Friday morning at her home along Wampum-New Galilee Road in New Beaver Borough. Press conference video runs 25 minutes.

02/19/09 Robert Hebb Apprehended in Missouri, Gabriella Trayer Safe
UPDATE: 44 year-old Robert Brian Hebb of New Castle has been apprehended in Missouri and 20 year-old Gabriella "Ellie" Trayer found safe.

02/08/09 Hickory Township Family Rescued After Creek Overflows
NOW OPEN ACCESS The Hilton family of 344 Algoma Lane, Hickory Township, had to be rescued, along with their three dogs, from the rising waters of the Neshannock Creek.

One man is dead, two other people are taken by medical helicopters to trauma centers after a 2-vehicle accident on Route 388 at Frew Mill Road in Shenango Township. The accident occured shortly after noon.

Fire breaks out at the East Wind Restaurant on New Butler Road in Shenango Township, Lawrence County. According to David Rishel, Shenango Township fire chief, the smokey fire was brought under control in about an hour and was mainly in the basement area although the entire building suffered smoke and water damage.

Several vehicles were hit from behind by a delivery van which couldn't avoid hitting the eastbound stopped vehicles on Route 422 Thursday afternoon. Two drivers were transported by Noga Ambulance personnel to a local hospital with whip-lash type injuries. The van driver, who wasn't injured, will be cited for several traffic violations.
