12/21/2018 1 Cat Dead, 1 Survives Vista South Apartment Fire
Date and Time:
Location: 1116 S. Mercer Street New Castle, PA Lawrence County
Firemen responded to an apartment fire on the third floor of Vista South at 1116 S. Mercer Street in New Castle on Friday at 10 PM. The resident of the apartment told firefighters that grease ignited on the stove and spread to the cupboards. She was able to escape the flames but her cat died in the fire. A neighbor, Sheila Pitts, followed by her own cat Ralphy, went to help the woman in the burning apartment. Ralphy went in to the burning apartment but did not come out. Firemen, after putting out the fire, found Ralphy unresponsive and with the help of Medevac personnel, began giving oxygen to the cat. After nearly 25 minutes, the cat started to come around and began breathing on its own. Six people were treated at the scene but no one had to be transported. All residents, except the woman that lived in the apartment where the fire started, were able to return to their apartments by 11 PM. KDSTVíS Joe Sobczak spoke with Sheila Pitts and New Castle Fire Departmentís assistant chief, Michael Petrone. Hear what they had to say about the fire in a 3 minute video on KDSTV.com.
