02/01/14 Three Fires Damage Buildings in New Castle
Date and Time:
Location: Moravia, Taylor & Grove Streets New Castle, Pennsylvania Lawrence County
Three separate fires within 24 hours kept New Castle firemen busy over the weekend. The first happened Friday evening at the A-Space storage facility along Moravia Street across from Central Heating. The fire was concentrated in the roof which kept firemen busy for hours dousing hot spots. Fire hydrants with low water pressure forced New Castle Fire Department to ask for assistance from several township departments with tankers and manpower.
The second occurred around 5 pm on Saturday at an old vacant concrete commercial building along Taylor Street. Firemen arrived to find flames coming out of the windows and smoke billowing from the roof of the two-story building. The fire was brought under control in a short time but firemen remained at the scene for several hours.
A short time after returning to the station, firemen were called to the "Old Lockley Machine Building", another vacant structure on Grove Street. A stairwell was found to be on fire which again kept firemen dousing hot spots for an hour and a half. The city fire investigator was called to investigate the vacant building fires.
