Location: Taylor Street New Castle Lawrence County
Fire broke out shortly before 10 am in a two story duplex on Taylor Street across from Tire Express in New Castle. A woman living in one of the apartments with her two young children smelled smoke and then found her rear porch on fire. She was able to make a 911 call from her cell phone and get her children to safety. The woman in the other apartment had just left to pick her child up at school. Fire Chief Mark Panella told KDSTV that all occupants were out of the house before they arrived. The high winds caused the flames to jump to a second house occupied by an elderly couple who also escaped unharmed. They watched as the flames tore through their home and destroyed it. Panella said both homes are pretty much a total loss. Firemen had problems getting water on the fire and that forced them to have Shenango Township VFD come to the scene to assist. Union Township VFD came into the city and manned Central Station while the city fought the fire.Panella said it was too soon to determine the cause of the fire. Taylor Street was closed for several hours while firemen fought the blaze.
