08/24/09 Army Bus Collides With Truck-Crane on Route 422

An west-bound army bus on the way to the New Castle area for repair was involved in an accident with a Truck-Crane on Route 422 in Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County. The mid-morning crash occurred when the bus driver attempted to avoid the truck which had pulled into the center lane on Route 422. The bus struck the side of the truck and then continued on to hit the guard rail on the north side of the road. A Concordia Visiting Nurse, Lynne Riding from Butler, was following the bus and saw the accident. She was hoisted into the bus by firemen from Shenango and Slippery Rock Townships and evaluated the condition of the two victims. The driver, Staff Sargent Kaczmarek of the Pittsburgh area, was in and out of coherency according to Riding. The passenger appeared to be not seriously hurt. The victims were removed through a window in the bus and transferred to Jameson Hospital in New Castle by Medevac Ambulance.. The driver of the truck was apparently not injured but was requested by New Castle State Police to get checked out. at the hospital. It is not known yet if any charges will be filed in the incident.
