11/27/08 Veteran Soldier Killed in Wampum Crash

Date and Time:  11/27/2008    Location: Rt. 18 in Wampum Boro Near Cemex
According to Lawrence County deputy coroner Sammy Teolis, 24 year-old military veteran, Jeff Gurley of New Castle, was killed in a one-car accident in Wampum early this morning. The crash occurred on Rt. 18 between the intersections of Rt.288 and Darlington Road around 5 o'clock. Gurley's north-bound vehicle was traveling on Rt. 18 at an apparently high-rate of speed, when for some unknown reason, the vehicle left the roadway, went up an enbankment, rolled over, hit the upper part of an over-head bridge and then landed on its roof on the roadway below. The car then caught fire and Gurley was trapped in his vehicle. Wampum Boro and New Beaver Firemen arrived on the scene to find a fully envolved vehicle fire. Sammy Teolis, Lawrence County deputy coroner, arrived on the scene a short time later. New Castle State Police are investigating the accident.
